Inside joke of the day: "That shit's like Lays...you can't have just one."
Well I think I've decided to apply for the teaching job in Taiwan with a video project on the side, which is probably what I'd be doing anyway if I was teaching in another country. While I was in Korea I shot a lot of video, too, all of which is sitting on shelf waiting to be made into some kind of cool documentary.
Today I'm working on my Socioling project. Blaaaaaaaahhhh... it's a beautiful sunny day and I don't want to be in here much longer, so I'm gonna do a little more writing and then split.

Hump Day!
Today I took a survey questionnaire from one of my linguistics classmates. It's a test to see how many pop culture references you know, how well you know them, and if you use them. There were a few I'd never even heard of, which of course makes me feel ancient. Such as "zhuzh" (apparently from Queer Eye, which I've seen but apparently not enough to pick up that slang), "text" -- as a VERB. (as in, "I'm texting my boyfriend on my cel phone." I've used "Text messaging" but in that case text is still a noun). There were a couple more I can't remember. One of them that I did know was "metrosexual" because my boyfriend is one. I always tease Bizarro because he checks himself out in the mirror far more than I do.
I think I'll catch the free show at the Athens Film Fest after class today. It's a surprise show, I guess, with audience surveys at the end. Cool. I miss the world of film and video.
Thanks to Bizarro for correcting the little ditty line 2!

Ay ay ay ay...sunshine on my shoulders
Ay ay ay ay...off to the fair I go
Ay ay ay ay...I'm enjoying life now
Ay ay ay ay...refreshing mango drink!
Those are the deep thoughts of my day, inspired by Adult Swim's "The Brak Show". This little ditty, sung by Brak's dad, really lightened my mood on the way into campus this morning. I'd lost my keys and was frantically searching for them, while it was getting later and later. (Finally I remembered they were in Bizarro's back pack from when we at at Yun Palace last night and I had no pockets for my keys.) I was all grumpy and shit, then I sang the little song and it made me giggle.
So here's to the inanities that lighten our load each day!
I received a lovely email from my friend Kat who was teaching in the same little town of Namchang, Ulsan, Korea with me. She just came back from a trip to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Very brave woman. She's the bees knees. When I really needed true friendship so many lightyears from home, she was there for me. And of course, she was also there for Kuba Kuba spicy chicken and beer, and hours of raucus noribang, smoking cheap-ass Korean cigs (I've since quit, don't worry - it was just the thing to do over there). I miss her.
I miss Korea, too.
Time to write my article review...ugh.

Long day...
It's 5:13 on Monday. Mondays are harsh for me because of my schedule, and because it's Monday. Somehow Wednesdays don't seem as bad, even though it's the exact same schedule as Monday.
I hafta finish up soon and hit the liberry before picking Bizarro up from work at 7:00. Wonder what's for dinner tonight... I think I have to go the Asian market and buy some kimchi...
Can't believe I'm going to China. My head is in academia these days so it's hard to think about the "real world."
I reviewed the demo reel of my good friend R. She worked on my Ireland film with me back in '98, and these days she's working as an associate producer at a media company in Central Mass. Anyway, she's looking for new job in NYC and has put together one kick-ass demo reel. Makes me miss being in video production. But if this Fulbright goes through, I'll be there again...
Kay, time to bolt.

More randomness...
Woo Hoo!! Just added comment capability, totally without any guidance from Bizarro. See, I ain't so dumb! I know to many of you computer geeks it's no big deal, but to me it's good to know that you can still teach an old dog new tricks.
So the Fulbright people now want me to apply for a particular internship, creating a teacher-training EFL video in Taiwan! I must have racked up some good karma somewhere, which is surprising considering my past history of lots of screw ups. But apparently I've done something right. I accept all these blessings in humble hopes of benefitting others, expanding my understanding of the world and of myself.
My karma has been on my mind today. I dreamed of a former friend of mine last night. This is a long story, but in essence what happened was that I moved in with my close friend from way back (we met in kindergarten) when I was living in Boston. But at that time, my life was chaotic, I didn't have direction, and I was searching, inwardly and outwardly. At one point I freaked her out by almost wanting to move to Pittsburgh, but then I decided against it. Then many months later, I decided in fact to move to Columbus, where the job market seemed much more promising than Boston, and where my then-boyfriend was living.
At that point in the story, she really really freaked out, yelled at me, accused me of using her, of being a horrible friend, etc. In fact, I hadn't made a plan for when I was moving, and I didn't just want to up and leave without getting her situated a bit first. I wanted to talk it out and figure it out.
She felt as if I was betraying her on SO many levels...and a lot of that goes back into her personal history as well as my own.
I was just trying to clean up the mess that was my life in the best way possible. I'd been living on eggshells around her for months, not ever sure when I was about to piss her off (a pattern we displayed at the ages of 7 as well as 33). So when the opportunity to leave came up... well... I took it.
Now it's four years later. I've never heard from her again. She insisted at that time that all communications regarding the apartment, etc. were to be done over email. The night that she screamed at me was the last time we exchanged any words in person. I've sent a couple letters and left her a message (albeit not a very inviting one) the last time I was in Boston, two years ago. Nothing.
Should I be relieved that this person with lots of issues is out of my life? Yes. But I also feel bad for the fact that I contributed to her misery. I wish I could tell her everything I've learned in the last four years that have totally changed me as a person. But I can't. So I have these dreams every so often (less often than used to be) in which we are renewing our friendship. Most times we just sit down and start talking and it's as if nothing happened.
Am I crazy for even caring?
With that thought, it's time to clean up and get outta here. Bizarro's picking me up for pizza. Mr. Club never emailed me back about going for pizza with us tonight, so I guess it's just us.

What's in a name?
Thought I'd begin today's collection of random thoughts with an explanation of "Fred In The Can Productions." When I was a kid, my brother (who is 15 years older than me, you might recall from my original post), and I had this joke about Fred In The Can. Neither one of us quite remembers what it meant or how it started. He was prolly stoned at the time, for all I knew, and so it was hilarious to him and so therefore it was funny to ME, being that I worshipped him when I was a tyke.
Yup. At one point in my very young life, my brother had me convinced he was Vulcan, until he accidentally cut himself shaving and it was revealed that he had red (well okay actually blue) but definitely not green blood. Thus began a long train of disappointments and letdowns in life...
In all seriousness, I love my brother dearly, and he WISHES he were a Vulcan (not having to deal with emotions, IOW). He's a Libertarian and a bit of a conspiratorialist. He might be right for all I know but I guess my attitude is "So what?" I live my life as I see fit, I try to be compassionate and humble in all things, and if some other guy or group of people are spinning their wheels or other people's wheels for power and such, let 'em. It's their karma.
Speaking of karma... yesterday I drove up to Columbus to hang out with a friend (we had a very enjoyable time) and go to KTC, the Tibetan Buddhist center I've been going to for the last two or three years. KTC stands for Karma Thegsum Choling, and our head monastery is in Woodstock, NY. (Check out KTD for more info on Tibetan Buddhism and the Kagyu Lineage.)
Anyway, last night one of the lamas from KTD was in town to perform a Refuge ceremony (Buddhist initiation rite, like a baptism except without water and taking Jesus Christ as your lord and savior), and to give the Empowerment for Green Tara.
Green Tara is my central bodhisattva practice - she is a highly realized being who helps us poor schmucks in samsara (the world of suffering in which we lived, caused by negative karma, essentially). The "empowerment" means that the practitioner can perform the chanting ritual to Tara and devote the maximum merit (good karma) for all sentient beings. See, in Buddhism, whatever we do, when we generate positive karma, or merit, we dedicate it so that all sentient beings benefit. It's the whole compassion thing, there. Anyway...
The Green Tara Empowerment was moving and powerful, and Bardor Tulku Rinpoche, the lama, was wonderful. Very accessible, speaking English and very funny and cute. I've met the other main abbot, he's a really old man with cataracts and all. But this guy, BR (for short), is really dynamic and I think he hooked a lot of us last night. He is a recognized Tulku, which means he is recognized as being the reincarnation of a high lama. See that website for more info on how that stuff works. Some of it is beyond me, really.
Anyway, from there, I had coffee with my friend Ed! at a Java Joe's before driving the hour and a half home at 10:00. Ed! is a great guy, so compassionate and funny. He makes malas in his spare time (of which there is a lot since he's unemployed) and does lots of dharma practice. his kids are terrors, though. He threatens them with "H-Time" when they get too out of hand (horizontal time, as in go lie down on your bed).
Welp, hey, gotta get some work done. Hope the weekend's been good to yous all. That's a NYC dialectal varient. (Yes, I'm a cunning linguist. There are you happy? I made the stupid joke that all Linguistics majors and grad students have to hear a kabillion times.)

Friday's Bones
Hey ho. Who you callin' a ho?
No dumbass, I was saying hello. oh. hi.
It's Friday... a mixed bag as they say. Sure I'm glad it's Friday, but when you're in grad school it doesn't really matter what day of the week it is. They all suck equally bad. Shaddap!! What I meant to say was that every day presents a huge long list of shit to get done and not enough time in which to do it.
I managed to get done today what I needed, including balancing my checkbook and redoubling my efforts to make sure I'll have enough freaking money to go to China this summer and not be broke when I get back. If I stay on budget and tutor my Korean tutee Nam Sook in June, I should be okay. I hope.
In other news, I heard from the Fulbright woman today. Turns out the East Asian Fulbright contact REALLY wants me to apply not for a teaching position but as a media/educator - they were really taken with my idea of making an EFL training video. They might even foot the bill for professional equipment, who knows!! That would really solve a lot of problems. We'll see how it goes but so far it looks promising. Oh, and this would be in Taiwan, BTW.
Man, who'd a thunk when my life fell apart just two years ago that I'd be travelling all over Asia and working on a Fulbright! So far I've been to Korea and Japan, adding the PRC this summer and on to Taiwan, hopefully, in 2005. Bizarro would come join me in Taiwan when he finishes his program , and then won't we be in seventh heaven!
Now to bring the room down... it's that time of year, again. My dad died when I was 11, on May 8, and each year during the weeks leading up to that date, I find myself wallowing in unexplicable emotion that sweeps me away and defies all practical decorum. Memories flash in the midst of whatever I happen to be doing or thinking, and my moods fluctuate wildly. This year marks 25 years. I can't believe he's been gone for 25 years, and it still feels like last week.
Mom says he would have loved Bizarro, not only because of his Filipino heritage (dad served in the Philippines during WWII) but because he apparantly bears some resemblance in personality and sense of humor to a friend of my dad's (Morris, who, ironically, is Japanese). I'm sure the two of them would have gotten along terrifically, as long as they didn't talk politics.
I wonder if my life would have been significantly different had my dad lived. I know it would have, in fact. For one thing I'd probably have entered a cloistered convent at the age of 18! Heh. Imagine me as a cloistered nun. No travel, no sex, no crazy pop culture sci-fi geekiness.
Tomorrow I'm going to Columbus to do some shopping and visit a friend of mine, and go to the Buddhist center for a special empowerment in the evening. I think I'll drive back tomorrow night, so it'll be a full day and I bet I'll be tired as hell. I just let my friend talk me (or rather, guilt me) into leaving earlier in the day than I'd wanted to. Well I'll leave when I leave and fuck it if she gets pissed off. It seem always to be about what she needs and never what I need these days. We were in Korea together (no, not the war, I mean teaching) and that was a stressful period for our friendship. Things are sometimes still stressful. She can be a demanding person, sometimes. Anyway..
*sigh*
I guess I should go do something productive.
Happy Earth Day.

Posting number 2. Wheeeeee!!
Figured I'd get my bizarre sense of humor out in the open from the get-go. I wrote this a couple of years ago...it always makes me larf but may not be funny to anyone else. So be it...
The beginning of this lil' gem was my attempt to find a name for my film (more info on that later) but somehow I spun off into another universe entirely. Here goes:

fucking rocksI didn't see the Sci Fi channel's crappy re-make, but clearly my treatment of the characters must be far superior. BTW, I met Boomer (at a sci fi convention - it was my brother's idea, REALLY!) and he truly is an all-around nice guy. By your command...
some Irish people
some spirals
pretty water
more fucking rocks
the end.
down by the creek. in a trailer. with some rocks.
stones of time
stones of hurt
stones up my arse
stones in my nose
ear stones
foot stones
arse stones
rocks of pleasure
rocks of hudson
rocks of heroic jubilation
rocks of ethnic pride
rocks of serious gooberdom
Irish rocks!
a planet where apes evolved from men??????????
the end.
Battlestar Galactica
Where men are men, women are women, stars are stars, and Captain Apollo likes to smell his own farts.
Starbuck -- found planet earth after a drunken, debaucherous planet hopping-spree and opened a chain of coffee houses that rivaled MicroSoft and Walmart for corporate buggary. All Starbucks are cigar-friendly cafes.
Casseopia -- started a prostitute’s guild on Planet XXX; bought 50 shares of stock in Starbuck’s aforementioned coffee house franchise.
Athena -- shaved her head and became a Dianic witch; cursed Starbuck to have blue balls for the rest of his natural life.
Boomer -- all around nice guy, never hurt no one, attends sci fi conventions in his spare time.
Sheba -- married Apollo, had his triplets, then left him for Patrick MacNee.
Commander Adama -- OD’d on Space Crack and died in a pool of his own vomit.
Boxy -- Enslaved by his mother and Patrick MacNee. Plotting his revenge against every member of the human race; destined to found a suicide cult that sacrifices daggets to the little green men in the flying saucers.
Captain Tigh -- Eventually had the rod removed from his ass and found to his great surprise that he was gay. Developed a serious crush on Capt. Apollo, and was fired from the bridge. Now he travels to planet after planet, sci fi con after sci fi con, wistfully searching for a man who can satisfy him.
Baltar -- After escaping from Galactica, returns to the Cylon empire only to be laughed at in that metallic, hollow laughter peculiar to Cylon centurians. Broken and spiritless, he now manages a Starbuck’s Coffee on Planet XXX.
Captain Apollo -- Founds the Captain Apollo fanclub and tries publishing his memoirs in every sector of the galaxy, unsuccessfully. Ends up begging Boomer to tag along to sci fi conventions, where he sells “Apollo is awesome!” and “Apollo is sexier than Starbuck!” t-shirts to 40-year-old housewives, and Captain Tigh.
First, there was light...
Greetings and salutations! This is my first attempt at making a blog, and hopefully this will get better and better as time goes on.
Who am I? That's a very simple question with complicated answers. On paper, I am a filmmaker who has embarked on a career as a teacher of EFL/ESL (English as a Foreign/Second Language). Last year I taught in Korea, this summer I will be teaching in China, and believe it or not I'm taking the plunge and am applying for a Fulbright scholarship to teach in Taiwan in 2005.
I am deliriously in love with man I will call "Bizarro" (Sealab 2021 reference), and we'll be getting hitched next summer.
I own four little neon tetra fish (hereafter referred to as "The Fishies"), who Bizarro and I have named after characters from Glengarry Glen Ross (that is, Roma, Moss, Shelley, and Aaronow).
I have a 76 year old mom and a 51 year old brother, a 29-soon-to-be-30 year old nephew whose birfday is in two days. Oh yeah, I'm 36.
Those are the major players, I think. So there... first posting, in the bag.
That wasn't so hard...
