This song has never been more over the top

Funny how lyrics that just seemed "cool" when you're 17 take on a whole new meaning when you're the Meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything (42).

This song has never been more true

Loved it when I was in high school, but these days the lyrics are damned appropriate:

Here's a song I've NEVER understood:

"Walk like a man, talk like a man" in falsetto.

Julie Andrews is da bomb

Which musical extravaganza do you prefer:

Sound of Music (Julie Andrews as postulent nun-turned nanny of seven-turned Frau Von Trapp-turned Nazi Austria escapee)

or...

Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews as magical nanny-derby winner on a merry-go-round horse-sweet on a chimney sweep-family mender)?

Tro lo lo lo

I've been swept away by the latest obsession on teh intranets.

This guy rocks my world with bongos, lip syncing, Soviet-era TV budget, and raw sexual maleness.

Survival of the Fittest

I did survive my first day of the 2 screenwriting sections, but barely. 15 minutes late to first class. I think I was so traumatized thinking about the developmental writing class I teach tomorrow at the community college that I was thinking 10:00 10:00 10:00 - even though my first screenwriting class was at 9:25. The department secretary had to come get me in my office when a student went looking for me. Mortifying.

The rest of the day went fairly well, though. The classes were just fine. I seem to have a variety of students in both sections (as far as backgrounds and stuff). They seem like a lovable lot.

Tomorrow though - I am very nervous. I am coming home in the afternoon and curling up into the futon with my PJs and a rum and OJ.

Went downtown to see a local funkadelic band do an outdoor concert this evening with Bizarro, against my better judgment. I figured it might relax me. And in fact, it did. I had a nice dinner by myself at my favorite Korean/Japanese restaurant, then met up with Bizarro and a friend of ours for the festivities. We stayed at a table a bit away from the bandstand and all the writhing, flitting, Acid-batting hippies swinging their dreadlocks this a-way and that a-way.

While ducking the patchouli and Nag Champa olfactory bombardment, I ran into another friend of mine, a fellow adjunct, and we discovered that we're both planning on the water aerobics class this fall, so it'll be great to have a buddy.

I'm headed to bed soon to be as ready for tomorrow's 10:00 class as possible. I think I have to read that Japanese book on warfare to get ready for this semester. Five Rings, it's called? Something like that. It's in the other room I think.

One last note - hung my diplomas by my desk tonight. This should, in feng shui terms, bring my intellect to bear on my work and job search. God only knows I'm in debt up to my earballs for them.

One of my fave Tori tunes, performed live in 1996 (around the time I followed her on tour across NYS and Toronto).

Music...nonstop...technopop

Spent actual money in an actual bookstore to purchase two CDs tonight (as opposed to ripping them illegally):

Tori Amos' new venture "Abnormally Attracted to Sin." I am enjoying it more on the 2nd listen through. I keep expecting to hear the Tori I remember from early/mid-90s, which just ain't going to happen. When I step back from that expectation, this album works as a Tori landscape, with a combo of trip hop (Give), dark vampy stuff (Strong Black Vine), some crashing piano (Lady in Blue) and Tori's wonderfully twisted sense of humor on "Mary Jane." I give this album a B+. I just bought the basic CD, not the enhanced version with the videos and extra stuff. Just the songs, ma'am.

Animal Collective's "Merriweather Post Pavillion," the newest from this noise pop quartet with an echo of The Beach Boys ca. "SMiLE" and Kraftwerk's electronic, pulsing symphonies. I adore these guys and have to eat up everything they've ever produced. My introduction to Animal Collective was the 2nd track on the album, "My Girls:"

Take me to Aruanda

There's a land, Aruanda
Diamond sand, Aruanda
Silver stars on the hill top
Take me to Aruanda

Lots of fish in the stream near
Lots of dangers to dream there
Golden sun in the valley
Take me to Aruanda

There where nobody worries
There where nobody hurries
Easy life waving you're welcome
Take me there

Leave my sadness behind me
Let sweet paradise find me
Heaven waits over yonder
Take me to Aruanda

A sad ending to an era that some would call even sadder.

Muzak files for bankruptcy.

I found this like at Weirdomusic.com. Check it out and get your space age bachelor pad groove on.

Malaguena

I have a partial recording of my Dad playing Malaguena on his accordion and it is amazing. Wish I could get that in a format to post here... meantime you can enjoy Jose Feliciano

An actual post...

I've put up a lot of LOLs in the last couple weeks, so I figured it's time for a bona fide post.

This week was meh. Classes went well, though I am reminded that I have to be more on top of shit now that I have 2 sections of the advanced class as well as the 1 credit dropping at the community college. It's fine; I'm just getting used to the schedule and workload after what amounted to an extended winter break.

I have applied for 2 full time positions at area colleges; I remain cautiously optimistic about my chances. By this time all the HR departments in the area should know my name because I apply for everything (haven't gotten a single interview - well not entirely true but the interviews I had were for a summer program and a one-semester only gig). No interviews for the jobs with legs, I should say. Now with the community college experience under my belt, I'm hoping I will be more attractive to these places. Apparently only working at snooty private colleges and universities isn't good enough.

I'm gettin' my fix of Hawaiian ear snacks with Na Palapalai. Incidentally, Peege (my nephew) and I found our one main area of differing tastes re: Hawaiian music. I still laugh at the memory of his "contributions" to the tunes I played when he was here last month.
