New ways to procrastinate...

I am indeed finding new ways to procrastinate today. I have managed to get a few things done, including hauswerk and rearranging the sock drawer.

Trying to write this "statement of philosophy" for the job I'm applying for at the community college. It's not really a statement of philosophy, though. They want me to state what I believe to be the concept of a community college, and explain why I want to join their staff.

BECAUSE I NEED A FECKING JOB, YOU MORONS!

No, that's not what I said.

The funny thing is I've applied to a dozen jobs there since 2005 and have rewritten this goddamn statement every time.

No wonder I am procrastinating! At least the dishes are clean and I know where my socks are.

An actual post...

I've put up a lot of LOLs in the last couple weeks, so I figured it's time for a bona fide post.

This week was meh. Classes went well, though I am reminded that I have to be more on top of shit now that I have 2 sections of the advanced class as well as the 1 credit dropping at the community college. It's fine; I'm just getting used to the schedule and workload after what amounted to an extended winter break.

I have applied for 2 full time positions at area colleges; I remain cautiously optimistic about my chances. By this time all the HR departments in the area should know my name because I apply for everything (haven't gotten a single interview - well not entirely true but the interviews I had were for a summer program and a one-semester only gig). No interviews for the jobs with legs, I should say. Now with the community college experience under my belt, I'm hoping I will be more attractive to these places. Apparently only working at snooty private colleges and universities isn't good enough.

I'm gettin' my fix of Hawaiian ear snacks with Na Palapalai. Incidentally, Peege (my nephew) and I found our one main area of differing tastes re: Hawaiian music. I still laugh at the memory of his "contributions" to the tunes I played when he was here last month.

Suicidal Salaryman

I know, I know, it's really in poor taste, but you HAVE to try this game. I was up until 1:30 a.m. with it last night:

Karoshi Suicide Salary Man from AddictingGames.com.

Seems very fitting for our current economic crisis, don't you think?

Iz haz a kold

It occurs to me after snuffling and blowing my nose for the umteenth time this morning that my congestion and the overall fatigue I've felt for a couple days might not be a coincidence. I might just have a cold. Gawd knows everyone else around town has one, or is just getting over one, or is just getting one. I pray that I don't end up with the stomach bug that I've heard tales of. Ew. Anything but the stomach. A runny nose I can handle. Other things... not so much.

I have work to do today which I don't feel like doing. And PMP has her public presentation this afternoon, which I am hoping to make if this kold doesn't increase in snot buckets or sleeping mode. I have to take the bus because there's no place to park on campus without a special pass, which of course I do not have.

It is Friday. I have a runny nose.

Get to know: Dave Kalama

From the man's website: "Dave is an all around Hawaiian waterman who comes from a lineage of surfing champions. He is a master wave rider, who began as a world champion windsurfer, and has evolved into one of the pioneers and premiere big wave, tow-in surfers of our time."

He and Laird Hamilton are partners in big wave riding, and Kalama has the same all around waterman background as Laird. He's a little less shy about his sponsorship, but I'm sure he doesn't mind the support for Kalama Kamps, bringing individualized watersport training to Maui. Now THAT would be a dream vacation! Anyone who would like to contribute to my dream vacation, feel free to drop me a note. Paypal accepted, as well as taping quarters to a piece of cardboard and sending through U.S. Postal Service.

Every single, stinking bean...

(Thanks to Mr. Club/B for this caffeinated treat!)

Inquiring minds want to know...

"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." -- Ronald Reagan

Coping

Friday I dropped the rest of Mom's clothes and personal effects off at a clothing donation shed at the church I worked for. I also paid for 3 Masses to be said for her, and I used the $4 she had put in church envelopes that never made it to church in the donation box for lighting vigil candles. The prayers felt good; dropping her stuff off felt very weird.

The weather has warmed up considerably. Yesterday morning Bizarro and I went for our usual Saturday morning diner trip (in winter - in warmer weather it's the farmers market). Anyway, it was warmish and the sun was shining and I felt glorious. But before the food came at the diner I was overcome with sadness, thinking about Mom and missing her, knowing she is someplace unreachable. This stayed with me for much of the day. I spent a few hours alone, walking downtown, and realized that this state I was in was similar to waking from a dream. That's how it feels. To realize one chapter of my life is over and another beginning, but I'm not ready to quite let go of the previous chapter. I know this is normal, as long as it doesn't go on for years. It's only been 2.5 weeks since she passed away. I'm still grieving, even though I try to pretend like everything's back to business as normal. It may look like that, but I have to acknowledge that it really isn't. I may be back to work and trying to get to my Yoga class, but I know I'm also sleeping a lot and having moments of deep sorrow that prevent me from doing much else. I know this is temporary; it will pass. For now I just have to cope with what it is. Spending time alone seems to be important, as does getting enough sleep and eating well and drinking enough water. I need to eat more vegetables and drink more water. Funny how a small thing like that can make a difference.

Has anyone else noticed...

...the ubiquitous internet ads for losing belly fat? I am so freaking tired of looking at pictures of ugly flab and lean tummies. Why are we so frakking obsessed with our bodies? It's fine to want to be healthy and feel good. It's a shame that people are making a killing off of other people's insecurities.

Back in the Saddle (again)

Taught my two sections of screenwriting at the Other School on the Hill last night. They went well; some great students in both sections with original story ideas. This morning will teach my short film writing class at the community college - looking forward to that.

It felt weird to be back at work at first, but by the time I got into my first class things felt normal and by the end of class, I felt good. "Oh yeah, this is what I do," sorta thing.

Still cleaning up loose ends for Mom, like closing out her bank account and sending out copies of the death certificate to various institutions. I will be very grateful when this phase is done. It is very unpleasant. At the bank yesterday I had a difficult time maintaining my composure; it just seemed to make her death more "real."

We will have Mom's ashes interred on May 29th with a graveside ceremony and a reception afterwards. Any friends who read this here blog want to know more, you know how to reach me. I'll also be sending out a general announcement.

I am looking forward to a couple good getaway weekends at the end of the month/beginning of next month (Rache is flying me to Cape Cod and Bizarro and I made reservations weeks ago for Splash Lagoon for our anniversary). This weekend I had to back out of plans to attend a spa day with friends of mine for a birthday party, thanks to Ms. Car Thang's $420 damage. We now have to use two keys - one for the locks, one for the ignition. "1978 called. They want their car technology back."

All in all I'd say I'm not doing too badly. At the moment. Moments come and go, you know. Thanks to everyone who's reached out to me, especially Black Jack, if you're out there.
